Starting out anonymously in the middle of the crowd, Catalan artist Quim Bigas could almost be a heckler before he takes possession of the space through his incessant movements, ending up in total synch with the music. His force of conviction is such that we experience the myriad personifications of happiness and unbridled collective joy. An “abstract yet very familiar notion” that is perfectly codified and controlled by advertisers and other dream-vendors, which Bigos explores with his body (with dance as the driving force) and his emotions. We are streets away from the iconic images of magazines; the audience experience is unique as we witness his unfettered “gesticulations”, his repeated leaps, his motionless running. When he jumps over the seats brandishing placards, when he grabs the mike to sing, when he launches into a breaking wave of jerky movements backed by a thunderous soundtrack, these are invitations to join in with the chorus and enter the round.

The very presence of Quim Bigas is enough to create an ecstatic upsurge in the audience around him. His dervish-like, very physical dance grabs our attention, sends shockwaves into our own bodies, and appeals to our awakened senses. It’s hard not to get carried away by this impromptu solo about joy and the representations of happiness.
